We recently completed a small outdoor electrical installation at a new-build property on the Priors Hall estate in Corby.
The homeowner had a long driveway which became very dark at night. This is a common issue on many newer housing estates, where the external lighting provided as standard can be fairly limited.
The customer wanted a simple, reliable solution that would improve visibility across the driveway without turning the job into anything larger than it needed to be.
For this project, we installed a new external LED floodlight and added a 2 gang IP66 weatherproof outdoor socket to the side of the garage. The installation was fed from the existing garage supply, with a fused spur installed to provide local isolation and protection for the outside light.
This was a straightforward domestic electrical job, but it is exactly the sort of work that still needs to be carried out properly.
The installation was kept deliberately practical. The aim was to improve the usability of the driveway at night and give the homeowner a safe outdoor power point for garden use.
No unnecessary extras. No overcomplication. Just a small job done correctly.
Many new-build homes are handed over with only basic external lighting. That might be enough for a front door or pathway, but it often does not properly light a driveway, side access, garage area or garden.
At this property in Priors Hall, the driveway was long and poorly lit, making it inconvenient during darker evenings.
Installing a floodlight gave the homeowner better visibility when parking, walking to and from the property, unloading the car or using the garage after dark. The added weatherproof socket also gave them a practical outdoor power point for general garden use.
Outdoor electrics are exposed to more demanding conditions than internal wiring. Rain, frost, sunlight, impact damage and general weather exposure all need to be considered.
That is why outdoor electrical work should not be treated as an afterthought. A proper installation should consider suitable IP-rated accessories, correct cable containment, safe isolation, RCD protection, mechanical protection, suitable fixing methods and testing after installation.
For this job, the wiring was run in PVC conduit to provide a clean and protected route across the garage wall. The outdoor socket selected was IP66 rated, making it suitable for external use when installed correctly.
The floodlight was supplied via a fused spur. This provides a safe and convenient way to isolate the light fitting if it ever needs maintenance, replacement or fault finding in the future.
It also allows the circuit to be fused down appropriately for the equipment being supplied. Small details like this matter. They make future maintenance easier and help keep the installation tidy, practical and safe.
A properly installed outdoor socket can be extremely useful. Homeowners commonly use them for lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, garden lighting, outdoor cleaning equipment, occasional DIY tools and seasonal decorations.
Without an external socket, people often end up running extension leads through windows or doors, which is not ideal and can create unnecessary risks. A fixed IP66 outdoor socket is a cleaner, safer and more practical solution.
This was not a major electrical project. It was a small installation: one floodlight, one fused spur and one outdoor socket.
But small electrical jobs still deserve the same care as larger ones. Poorly installed outdoor wiring can lead to water ingress, nuisance tripping, damaged cables or unreliable equipment.
Done properly, the installation should just work quietly in the background with no drama and no call backs. That was the aim here.

Can an outside light be fitted to a garage?
Yes. In many cases, an outside light can be fitted to a garage wall and supplied from the existing garage circuit, provided the circuit is suitable and has the correct protection.
Do outdoor sockets need to be RCD protected?
Yes, outdoor sockets should generally have RCD protection. The existing installation must be checked before adding external sockets.
Is an IP66 socket suitable for outside?
An IP66 socket is designed to provide protection against dust and powerful water jets when correctly installed and closed. It is a common choice for domestic outdoor socket installations.
Can you install outdoor electrics on a new-build home?
Yes. Many new-build properties benefit from additional outdoor lighting, garage sockets or garden power points after the homeowner has moved in and understands how they actually use the space.
