Full Kitchen Rewire in Northampton

Northampton, Northamptonshire
Kitchen Rewire & Testing
A complete kitchen electrical installation in Northampton, including full first fix, second fix, new kitchen ring circuit, dedicated cooker and induction hob supplies, appliance circuits, downlights, heat alarm, under-pelmet LED strip lighting, polished chrome accessories, consumer unit upgrade and certification.

Project Overview

A new kitchen is one of the biggest investments many homeowners make, but behind every finished kitchen is an electrical installation that has to be planned properly. Modern kitchens are not just a few sockets and a light fitting. They often include high-load cooking appliances, integrated equipment, feature lighting, extraction, heat detection, smart controls and multiple worktop power points.

For this project in Northampton, we were asked to complete the electrical work as part of a full kitchen renovation. Rather than adapting the existing wiring around a new layout, the decision was made to rewire the kitchen fully so the installation could be designed from the start around the finished room.

The project included full first fix, second fix, inspection, testing and certification, along with a new consumer unit providing full RCBO/RCD protection. The result is a kitchen electrical installation that is safer, tidier, easier to maintain and better suited to the way the customer will use the space.

The Works Completed

This project involved considerably more than replacing a few accessories. The electrical installation was redesigned around the customer’s new kitchen layout so that every appliance had the correct supply and each cable route made sense before the kitchen was fitted.

  • Full first fix and second fix electrical work
  • Brand new kitchen ring final circuit
  • New dedicated cooker supply
  • New dedicated induction hob supply
  • New appliance supplies for integrated equipment
  • LED downlight installation
  • Heat alarm installation
  • Under-pelmet LED strip lighting in aluminium profile with diffuser
  • Polished chrome switches and sockets throughout
  • New consumer unit with full RCBO/RCD protection
  • Inspection, testing and certification on completion

Because the kitchen walls were solid masonry construction, every cable route had to be chased into the walls carefully before making good. Planning this during the renovation allowed the finished kitchen to have a clean appearance with no visible trunking or surface wiring.

Why We Recommended a Full Kitchen Rewire

One of the most common questions homeowners ask is whether a full kitchen rewire is really necessary. The honest answer is that it depends on the existing installation, the age of the wiring, the appliances being installed and whether the new kitchen layout changes how the circuits will be used.

On this Northampton project, a full rewire was the most sensible route because the kitchen was being completely renovated and the new design required dedicated supplies for modern cooking appliances, reliable worktop power, lighting circuits and appliance feeds. Adapting older wiring would have been a compromise and could have made future fault finding more difficult.

A properly planned kitchen electrical installation gives the electrician a chance to design the circuits around the finished room instead of trying to make old cable routes fit a new layout. That is particularly important where induction hobs, double ovens, dishwashers, extractors and feature lighting all need to work safely and reliably together.

When Should You Consider Rewiring a Kitchen?

A kitchen rewire is usually worth considering if the room is being fully stripped out, the existing wiring is old, or the new design adds significant electrical load. It can also be sensible where the consumer unit needs upgrading, where there is no modern RCD protection, or where previous alterations have left the wiring difficult to understand.

Modern kitchens often include induction hobs, double ovens, dishwashers, American fridge freezers, extractor hoods, boiling water taps, USB charging points, under-cabinet lighting and smart appliances. Trying to squeeze all of that onto older circuits is not always safe, practical or future-proof.

For homeowners planning a kitchen renovation, the best time to deal with electrical work is before plastering, fitting and decorating. This is when cables can be chased neatly, accessory positions can be confirmed, and appliance supplies can be installed without disturbing a finished kitchen later.

Pros and Cons of Rewiring During a Kitchen Renovation

Benefits

A full kitchen rewire improves safety, allows the installation to be designed around the new kitchen, removes ageing accessories and gives each appliance the supply it needs. It also creates a cleaner finish because cables can be hidden properly before the room is completed.

It can also make the kitchen easier to maintain. Clear circuit design, modern protective devices and proper certification all help if future work is needed or if an Electrical Installation Condition Report is carried out later.

Considerations

The main downsides are disruption, dust and cost. Chasing solid walls, lifting floors where required and coordinating with other trades all take time. However, when the kitchen is already being renovated, much of that disruption is part of the wider project. Upgrading the electrics after a new kitchen is fitted is usually far more disruptive and often more expensive.

New Consumer Unit and Certification

As part of this project, a new consumer unit was also installed. This gave the new kitchen circuits modern protection and ensured the wider installation was not relying on ageing equipment.

A modern consumer unit upgrade can provide individual RCBO protection, RCD protection where required and a clearer foundation for future additions. Completing the consumer unit and kitchen rewire together meant the customer ended up with a properly coordinated electrical installation rather than new wiring connected into an outdated board.

All work was inspected, tested and certified on completion. For kitchen electrical work, certification is not just paperwork; it confirms the circuits have been tested and that the installation has been left in a safe condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rewire a kitchen without rewiring the whole house?

Yes. In many cases a kitchen can be rewired independently while the rest of the property remains unchanged, provided the existing installation is suitable and the consumer unit can safely support the new circuits.

Do I need a new consumer unit for a kitchen rewire?

Not always. If the existing consumer unit has suitable capacity and modern protection, it may be possible to retain it. If it lacks RCD or RCBO protection, has limited spare ways or is in poor condition, replacement may be recommended.

Is a kitchen rewire messy?

There is usually some disruption, especially where cables need to be chased into solid walls. That is why first fix is normally completed before plastering, decorating and kitchen fitting.

How long does a kitchen rewire take?

The first fix is usually completed before the kitchen is fitted, with the second fix carried out after units, worktops and decorating are ready. Timescales depend on the room size, wall construction, number of appliances and coordination with other trades.
