Modern RCBO Protection for Maximum Safety and Peace of Mind

If your consumer unit (sometimes called a fuse board) is buzzing, tripping frequently, or simply feeling outdated, you're not alone — and you don't have to live with the risk. At Entigen, we provide professional consumer unit replacement across Kettering & Northamptonshire. The replacement work is designed, installed and tested to the current requirements applicable to that work, with protection suited to modern electrical demands.

We replace old fuse boxes with modern, metal-clad boards that include residual-current protection and circuit-by-circuit fault protection — tested, certified, and notified to Building Control via our NAPIT registration. Warning Signs

Why Replace Your Consumer Unit?

Missing RCD Protection
Older units may lack RCD or individual RCBO protection — essential for safety under BS 7671. Without it, a fault could be fatal.
Degraded & Ageing Boards
Plastic fuse boxes degrade over time. Melting, overheating and corrosion can lead to electrical fires. A buzzing or warm board needs attention.
Insurance & EICR Issues
An older consumer unit is not automatically unsafe or an automatic EICR failure because of its age alone. Its condition, protective devices, earthing and bonding, signs of damage or overheating, and suitability for the installation must be assessed. Insurer requirements vary, so customers should check their own policy.
Preparing for EV or Extensions
Adding an EV charger, garden office, or extra circuits? An upgraded consumer unit provides the capacity and spare ways you need.
Frequent Tripping
Nuisance trips taking out half the house at once? An RCBO board means a fault on one circuit affects only that circuit. Fewer trips, easier fault-finding.
Peace of Mind
A new consumer unit is the backbone of your home's electrical safety. Better protection, fewer trips, and paperwork to prove compliance.

Our Standard Specification

Individual Circuit and Surge Protection

At Entigen, we now quote consumer unit replacements using individual Type A RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection as our standard specification. Individual RCBOs help prevent a fault on one circuit from unnecessarily disconnecting others, while surge protection provides additional protection for connected equipment.

Circuit Protection
Individual Type A RCBOs
Each circuit has its own RCBO, combining overcurrent and residual-current protection. A fault on one circuit is less likely to disconnect other circuits unnecessarily.
What Affects the Price

The number of circuits, defects revealed during testing, earthing and bonding, meter tails and supply arrangements, existing circuit condition, access and labelling, asbestos-containing equipment or enclosures, and any additional remedial work can affect the quotation. Any necessary additional work will be explained and priced before it is carried out.

Step by Step

What Happens on the Day

When we replace your old fuse board with a modern consumer unit, we follow a clear step-by-step process so you know exactly what to expect.

Power Isolation
We safely isolate the supply and verify the system is completely dead before starting any work.
Circuit Testing
Each existing circuit is tested for insulation resistance, continuity and polarity to confirm it's suitable for connection to the new board.
Removal & Preparation
The old unit is removed, the wall prepared, and a new metal-clad enclosure securely fitted in place.
Re-termination & Protection
Circuits are reconnected with individual Type A RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection fitted as our standard specification.
Final Testing & Labelling
Inspection and testing appropriate to the replacement work is completed. The board is clearly labelled and your Electrical Installation Certificate is completed.
Compliance Notification
The work is registered with Building Control through our NAPIT scheme. You receive the certification and Building Control notification applicable to the replacement work.

Common Questions

Consumer Unit Replacement — FAQs

Usually half a day to a full day depending on complexity — the number of circuits, ease of access, and condition of existing wiring. We give you a clear timescale before we start and coordinate power isolation around your schedule.
An older consumer unit is not automatically unsafe or an automatic EICR failure because of its age alone. Its condition, protective devices, earthing and bonding, signs of damage or overheating, and suitability for the installation must be assessed. Insurer requirements vary, so customers should check their own policy.
Not automatically. An unsatisfactory EICR does not by itself mean the consumer unit must be replaced; the appropriate remedial action depends on the actual observations and classification codes. Replacement may be appropriate where the unit or its protective arrangements are unsuitable or unsafe, but it is not an automatic legal requirement solely because an EICR is unsatisfactory.
A consumer unit upgrade using individual Type A RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection typically starts from around £650. Depending on circuit count and the condition and configuration of the existing installation, a typical total may be around £650–£1,350. We provide a fixed quotation after assessing the installation. The price can be affected by the number of circuits, defects revealed during testing, earthing and bonding, meter tails and supply arrangements, existing circuit condition, access and labelling, asbestos-containing equipment or enclosures, and any additional remedial work. Any necessary additional work will be explained and priced before it is carried out.
We plan to minimise downtime. There will be a period with the power isolated, but we coordinate timings with you. We aim to complete the replacement and restore power during the planned working period, subject to the condition of the existing installation and test findings.
Yes. We offer warranties on both parts (unit, breakers) and labour. Electrical certification and Building Regulations notification are provided where applicable to the work carried out.
